If it’s the original Triplex glass, you can work out the year (and month/quarter) it was made. It should say TOUGHENED or LAMINATED.
Tempered Safety Glass. I am confused about what type of glass to use to replace the broken glass in the window in my front door. I have been told that it needs to be safety glass and that there are two basic kinds. Can you tell me the difference between laminated glass and tempered glass? Are both of them safe to use? When selecting safety glass for an application, whether decorative or functional, two choices often arise: tempered or laminated glass.
But tempered glass and laminated glass each have distinct and different advantages. Tempered glass is made by heating and cooling a piece of standard glass in a tempering furnace. This process is also known as quenching.
Triplex Glass Codes
I have an original E-type headlight glass, which is surplus to my requirements, and upon checking Ebay, noticed they can apparently be dated by the dots under Triplex and Toughened. Is anyone able to identify the correct year from these dots? Not even Pilkington Classic know why the glass was date marked. It serves no useful purpose apparently and modern glass does not always have it. The M number is unique to the manufacturer, so an M number of M by one manufacturer could be different than glass labelled as M by another manufacturer.

Naturally occurring glass, such as volcanic glass obsidian, has been used by stone-age man for the production of weapons, ornaments and money. The place and date of origin of manufactured glass is not completely known. According to Pliny the Elder, ancient Roman historian, Phoenician merchants deserve the credit for the discovery of glass in the region of Syria. The tradition is that a merchant ship laden with nitrum being moored at this place, the merchants were preparing their meal on the beach, and not having stones to prop up their pots, they used lumps of nitrum from the ship, which fused and mixed with the sands of the shore, and there flowed sreams of a new translucent liquid, and thus was the origin of glass This story may not be true but Syria was one of the original centers of glassmaking and ancient Phoenician traders sold glass wear all through the Mediterranean countries.
Egypt was another country in which glassmaking was known at an early time. It is believed that the earliest glass object was created around BC in Egypt and Eastern Mesopotamia. The oldest specimens of glass are from Egypt and date back to B. In BC the industry was well established in Egypt. After BC the Egyptians learned to press glass into molds. In the 1st century glassblowing was discovered by Syrian craftsmen.
Thanks to this development, everyone could to afford glass not only to the wealthy. Safety glass has been in use since the early 20th century and it is used as alternative to regular glass in situations where heat would cause problems with regular glass or where it would be hazardous if the glass broke.

My question is, how do I tell the decade of the glass? I can’t find any reference to it on the internet so I just wondered if anyone knew? Both rear side windows 2-door have the same markings, as does the driver’s and passenger’s door glass. Which would suggest that perhaps it’s the original glass?
It confused me as BOTH quaterlight glasses have the same markings, which would suggest they had been replaced at the same time. If they were different then you could assume that they had been smashed in an attempted break in or something

Triplex Safety Glass is a British brand of toughened glass and laminated glass. The marque is often seen on vehicle and aircraft windscreens. In the s Triplex bought its main competitor British Indestructo Glass , giving it a monopoly in British laminated glass production. In the s, around 1, people worked at the Triplex site in St Helens and about at the site in Kings Norton.
In , Saint-Gobain and Pilkington negotiated directly and, from this date to the car industry began to require safety glass, first laminated and then toughened. Another type of safety glass was the Triplex glass, a sandwich of a plastic foil.
Newell, Kenilworth, and Raymond. Disclosure This invention relates to methods of and apparatus for toughening sheets of glass, such as are used, for example as automobile windscreens and backlights. Glass is toughened by subjecting the glass when at a temperature near the softening point of the glass to a rapid chilling effected by directing jets termed quenching jets usually of air, on to the glass, The degree of toughening achieved varies with the rate of chilling.
The toughened glass comprises outer layers under compression which envelop glass in tension, hence the type of disintegration into small sections termed dicing of toughened glass when the surface layer is fractured. The basic requirements of a windscreen of toughened glass are that it shall be physically strong, free from severe optical distortion, and when broken shall exhibit a dicing type of fracture, while retaining reasonable visibility through it.
The particle or disc size is controlled by the stresses imposed on the glass by rapid quenching of it with jets of air from a substantially uniform temperature near to the softening point of the glass, the fiercer the quenching the smaller the general particle size formed. For maximum visibility on fracture, a low state of stress is required giving large particles, but such large particles in general have lower safety properties than fine particles. One method of obtaining maximum safety with maximum visibility is described and claimed in our UK.

Posted by Colin Hedger on September 13, , am Colin Hedger I seem to remember that you can tell somehow the approx age of the glass fitted to a car by some sort of code printed on it. That way you can tell if its had any new glass fitted during its life. Can anyone tell me if this is true, and if so what should i be looking for? Got a 91′ BMW M5 which needs glass and want to keep it looking as standard as poss for the purists!!
Thanks Colin Re: Glass Dating? I could be wrong but i think it only worked with Pilkington glass, there was a dot over or under a certain letter to denote the year, but not sure how it works Most of the glass replaced by windscreen companies comes from South Africa with nothing etched Peter Re: Glass Dating?
