Columbia originated with the Columbia Phonograph Company, a licencee of the North American Phonograph Company, which was set up in the s to control and licence the phonograph patents registered by inventors Charles Sumner Tainter, Chichester A. Bell and Thomas A. In Columbia Phonograph was the first company to offer a catalogue of its phonographs and cylinders. By it was manufacturing hundreds of cylinders daily, and by the turn of the century it had a catalogue of more than titles. In the spring of , the company began recording stars of the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Columbia was also among the first to produce the new double-sided disc, with recordings stamped on both sides. In , Columbia began recording symphony orchestras, notably the Chicago and New York orchestras. Columbia originated as the Columbia Phonograph Co.

The first label variation on which Beatles records were pressed was the classic black label with a rainbow color band. This variation of the Black Rainbow label was first issued in the early sixties T and has a glossy label. Easton — and a group of investors. It derived its name from the District of Columbia , where it was headquartered. As was the custom of some of the regional phonograph companies, Columbia produced many commercial cylinder recordings of its own, and its catalogue of musical records in was 10 pages. Thereafter it sold only records and phonographs of its own manufacture. In , Columbia introduced the “XP” record, a molded brown wax record, to use up old stock. Columbia introduced black wax records in According to one source, they continued to mold brown waxes until with the highest number being , “Heinie”, which is a duet by Arthur Collins and Byron G.
The molded brown waxes may have been sold to Sears for distribution possibly under Sears’ Oxford trademark for Columbia products. Columbia began selling disc records invented and patented by Victor Talking Machine Company’s Emile Berliner and phonographs in addition to the cylinder system in , preceded only by their “Toy Graphophone” of , which used small, vertically cut records. For a decade, Columbia competed with both the Edison Phonograph Company cylinders and the Victor Talking Machine Company disc records as one of the top three names in American recorded sound.
In order to add prestige to its early catalog of artists, Columbia contracted a number of New York Metropolitan Opera stars to make recordings from onward. After an abortive attempt in to manufacture discs with the recording grooves stamped into both sides of each disc—not just one—in Columbia commenced successful mass production of what they called their “Double-Faced” discs, the inch variety initially selling for 65 cents apiece.
