Every SMLE rifle produced had a bayonet with a matching serial number issued with it. However, for a variety of circumstances, most Pattern 07 bayonets and SMLE rifles ended up being mismatched during the service life of the rifles and bayonets. The bayonets issued to Australian soldiers at the beginning of the First World War and Gallipoli were Pattern Bayonets which featured a hook quillon.
Later in the hook quillon was dispensed with, being removed from some older bayonets and new bayonets being manufactured without. Serial numbers stamped on rifles and bayonets were primarily for factory auditing purposes. These serial numbers also served battalion armourers to establish inventories within their allocations of rifles and bayonets. As rifles were issued to soldiers, armourers kept basic distribution records. In general, a soldier who was destined for combat service was issued with rifle and bayonet which he kept until his service in a combat role was no longer required at which point the rifle and bayonet were returned to the battalion armourers.
The caveat being that the soldier may have been killed, wounded, the weapon became unserviceable, lost etc.
Yes, of course take it out for the day, and lift its skirts, because this means it not being ‘stood up’ Many, but not all, of our pages carry date information on the various rifles illustrated or discussed, where it has been possible to be sure of data. There are a number of methods by which a rifle can be dated, or at least bracketed between certain years of manufacture. For the latter, dates of introduction of military arms can be located within the Government “List of Changes” LoCs as can dates of obsolescence and of modification or upgrade to later marks.
You may not necessarily find specific date information within the text of particular pages, but often the images of advertisements or catalogue entries contain some dating ‘give-away’, such as the year in which a particular rifle achieved a notable competition score by someone, but which data is in graphic format and therefore not “searchable” by a text search engine.
Do not briefly glance over a page and assume that the information you require is not there.

Over the past several months, Enfield Rifle Research has received dozens of questions about the spate of “new” and “rare” Lee-Enfields that have been showing up lately at gun shows and in pawn shops. Navy Arms Company is making and selling a lot of these, and they usually describe them albeit in the fine print as “replicas” or “constructed of original No. SARCO and SOG among others are also marketing these or similar rifles for comparable prices, again with fair–or at least technically honest–advertising.
The problem arises when these aftermarket replicas pass through several hands and wind up offered for sale at a gun show or in a pawn shop. Typically, the advertising such as it was gets lost, the price gets jacked up, and the seller claims maybe because he believes it that the piece really is a long-lost treasure.
A lot of people are getting burned by these knock-offs, and an even greater number are just plain confused. Watch out for these! It is possible though not likely that some Lithgow-manufactured rifles with late or later dates were kept in storage and subsequently surplused out in unfired or unissued condition. Neither the nose cap nor the bottom of the backsight leaf will carry a different serial number on these rifles.
These plates will be attached with small brass wood screws. This was the height of the war, and virtually all rifles manufactured were issued. If you find different serial numbers on different parts, this is clear evidence that it is a parts gun. And if the recoil plates are missing, it is not only a parts gun–it could be dangerous to shoot.

The Lee-Enfield was born in as a marriage between the James Paris Lee designed magazine and bolt action, and Enfield pattern rifling. The Lee—Enfield SMLE is a bolt-action, magazine-fed, repeating rifle that was the main firearm used by the military forces of the British Empire and Commonwealth during the first half of the 20th century. I’ve found this situation with several SMLE rifles that had been restocked or the rear handguard replaced, and the rear handguard I got for my SMLE had to be trimmed quite a bit to allow the sight to come all the way down at lowest setting.
Simple, reliable, forward post is equipped with volley sight peep hole to comply with early competition regulation, plus a going to war requirement when shooters went to WW1 and took their sights with them. It was unusual for a rifle in WWI to have a detachable 10 round magazine not unlike that of modern battle rifles. If you like to shoot, work on guns as a business or hobby, or just own a gun, this is the place for you!
